Invest In The Lord

We live in a world that revolves around money. People are looking for the best investment for their money. We need to plan for the future, today! The same can be said of our spiritual life. We need to plan for the future, today! The person who invests in the Lord will never have to worry about his/her investment. Consider the words of Solomon: "How blessed is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding. For its profit is better than the profit of silver, And its gain than fine gold” Prov 3:13-16. If you're looking for the best investment, invest in the Lord. The church of Christ is seeking that investment. Come learn about the debt that we could not pay in the investment in God's Son. We meet at 9:30 AM on Sundays at 2020 Pine Street. Come join us.

How To Handle Mistreatment

The 119th Psalm is rich with instruction for everyday life. In verses 81-88, the writer teaches how to handle mistreatment:

  1. What does the Scriptures say (83)

  2. Remember that persecution does not last forever (84).

  3. Leave the Justice to God (84b).

  4. Lean on the Trustworthiness of God (96).

  5. Use the help of others (86b).

  6. Never Give Up (87).

  7. Draw strength from the nature of God (88).

  8. Keep the Testimonies of God (88b).

This life is not easy. There are no promises of anything. However, the Psalmist offers some timely therapy in a world of confusion. Come visit us at the church of Christ at 2020 Pine Street.

Seven Principles for Successful Living

The Bible is solutions to life's problems. For example, are you searching for answers in seeking a better life? Consider Psalm 119:57-64. The writer offers seven principles for successful living. They are:

  1. Have a Resolute Purpose (v57) "I have said", "I will"

  2. Pray for Guidance (v58)

  3. Self-Examination (v59)

  4. Conquer Procrastination (v60)

  5. Learn How to Handle Disappointments (v61).

  6. Watch Your Associates (v62)

  7. Be A Student of God's Word (v64).

Life is full of challenges. The Bible is the answer to life's problems. Come visit us at the church of Christ. We meet at 2020 Pine Street. 533-0128.

What is the meaning of self-esteem?

It means that we are to have respect and regard for ourselves to recognize our potential. What are some factors that will help in developing our self-esteem?

  1. A sense of security.

  2. A sense of belonging.

  3. A sense of competence.

  4. A sense of worth.

Note Gal. 2:20: "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Paul's security is being crucified with Christ, his belonging is living the Christian life, his competence is living "by faith” and his worth is in Jesus Christ. Come visit the Church of Christ at 2020 Pine Street

How and what do you think about yourself?

For many, our self-esteem is dependent upon our performance--that is do we measure up to the standards of this world and the opinion of what others think about us. For many this is how a person determines his or her self-esteem. The write of Proverbs writes: " For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Pr 23:7). Our self-esteem should not be based on our performance or the opinion of others. Self-esteem should be based on the word of God! Again, Jesus said: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mt 22:39). How you treat your neighbor is a reflection of how you treat yourself.

The Quest for Peace

Peace is found where it is lost - in human attitudes and behavior. So, how can a person find peace with himself? Here is a list of some ideas:

  1. Be Forbearing.

  2. Be Understanding.

  3. Be Compassionate.

  4. Be Forgiving.

All of these ideas can be found in the Bible. In fact, all of them were a part of the life of Christ. Are these a part of your life? The Church of Christ is seeking to learn more about Christ and His church. Will you come as we together learn more about Christianity? We meet at 2020 Pine Street with Worship at 9:30 AM and Bible classes at 11:00 AM. Come visit us!

Get Out of Yourself

The unhappiest and most self-centered person I know is the same person. The problem with our society is self-centeredness. But, where can man find the answers to life's problems? The Bible is the answer, if we will but take the time to open the book. So then, how can people get out of themselves? Note, the following:

  1. Happiness comes from losing self-- Jesus said: "He that finds his life shall lose it; and he that loses his life for my sake shall find it" (Matt.10:39).

  2. Happiness comes from helping others--"It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35).

  3. Happiness comes from knowing Christ. 'Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say rejoice!" (Phil.4:4).

Consequently, if you are unhappy with your life, then try living by getting out of yourselves. Come visit us! We are the Church of Christ. We meet for worship at 2020 Pine Street. We look forward to meeting you.

A Merry Heart

Solomon wrote: “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones” (Prov 17:22). We live in a world of pressures and turmoil. So, how can a person learn how to be happy in this world? The answer:

  1. Think Positively.

  2. Think Progressively.

  3. Think Constructively.

The measure of a man is in his thoughts. The Psalmist writes, "For as he thinks in his heart, so he is" (Pro.23:7). How and what do you think about, as you toil through the day will determine the person you are going to be. The Church of Christ meets at 2020 Pine Street. Please join us for worship and Bible classes. If you need more information please call 533-0128 or look us up on the web at www.churchofchristoroville.com.

God's Delight

In Jer 9:23-24, it says, “Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; (24) But let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says the LORD.” God says he delights in those people who understand and know Him. To accomplish this we must have the desire to seek those things, which are above (Col 3:1). Do you seek those things, which are above? If so, come join us for worship, WE DO! You can also study your Bible at www.churchofchristoroville.com.

Ten Rules For Misunderstanding The Bible - Part 3

This is part three of a list of rules some use to misunderstand the Bible.  Rule #7: Never ask for help or accept anyone’s offer to study. In Acts 8:30, 31, the Ethiopian Eunuch asked Philip for help. Rule #8: Be “picky” and “choosey,” i.e., pick and choose whatever you like and disregard the rest. Rule #9: Take the attitude, “It doesn’t matter what you believe.” That way you’ll have an excuse when you find a passage you don’t like. Rule #10: Accept your feelings as the final standard, not the Bible. Decide that you don’t have to do what the Bible says if you don’t want to. Follow these and you’ll be sure to misunderstand the Bible. There is a catch, though: be ready to lose your soul!!! (Jn 12:48; 2Pet 3:16).

Ten Rules For Misunderstanding The Bible - Part 2

Let’s continue our list of rules that some use to misunderstand the Bible.  Rule #4: Take every Scripture out of context and apply it to whatever you wish. The Bible calls those people “untaught and unstable people” who twist the Scripture to their own destruction (2 Pet 3:16).  Rule #5: Never look at parallel verses. It might ruin you misapplications. Rule #6: Do not bring together all verses dealing with a particular subject this could be fatal to misunderstanding. We will continue this list next week.

Ten Rules For Misunderstanding The Bible - Part 1

During the last three “Church Briefs” I have presented rules to properly study the Bible. I would now like to present a list of ten rules you can use to misunderstand the Bible.  First of all tell yourself you cannot understand it and that it is impossible for everyone to understand it alike. Eph 5:17 tells us the opposite, “Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Secondly, think on a carnal, physical level (Cf. Rom 8:5-6; Col 3:1-2). Thirdly, make up your mind about what you believe before you every open the Bible. Rom 10:3 says, “For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.” I will continue this next week.

Rules for Bible Study Part 3

This will complete the list of rules. Number eight: Study the context. Is it referring to the individual, to the church, etc? Many commandments are directed toward the individual as opposed to the church and vice versa. Number nine: Is it literal or figurative language? Number ten: Consider the order the books were written. Number eleven: Use the rules of the English language and the Greek language. The Bible is written so that we might know God’s will not speculate as to its’ meaning. Number twelve: Use common sense just as studying any other book!

Rules For Bible Study Part 2

This is a continuation from last week.  Rule number four: don’t make one passage contradict another.  Truth never contradicts itself.  Additional facts may be given but never a fact that contradicts another fact.  Along with that rule is rule number five: study all the Bible says on any subject. “The entirety of Your word is truth…” (Psa 119:160). Number six: always interpret difficult passages with simple passages and not the other way around. Number seven: which period of time is being discussed.  Is the text referring to a period before the OT Law, is it during the OT Law, is it during the NT?  I will continue the list next week.

Rules For Bible Study - Part 1

Last week I mentioned the “fair-minded” Bereans who searched the Scriptures daily. Here is a list of rules you can use to study the Bible to determine the truth on any subject. First of all make sure it is THE Bible. Many “new” translations are not accurate and are designed to promote a particular religious view. Secondly, study with the proper attitude. For example, desire to seek the truth, realize the Bible is authored by God, study as though your salvation depended on it (It does!), and study it to learn the truth, not to prove a point. Thirdly, determine who is speaking and who is being spoken to. I will continue the list next week. Join us on Sundays and Wednesdays to study God’s word.

We Care About Your Soul

The apostle Paul encountered some people in the city of Berea that were, “more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11). These people were described in such a positive light because of their readiness to search God’s word concerning those things taught to them by Paul. Are you ready to study God’s word? If so, join us on Sundays and Wednesdays to study God’s word.

We Care About Your Soul

We are vitally concerned about souls---yours and ours. Jesus asked the question, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Matt 16:26). We Care About You Being A Christian

You no doubt have wondered about the many names worn by religious people. We wear the name given by God at Antioch (Acts 11:26). Wouldn’t it be great if all were contented to be just Christians? We are determined to be “Christians only,” without prefix or suffix, and we would want the same for you. We extend our invitation to come and visit us Sunday and Wednesday to study God’s word.

We Care About Your Problems!

If there is anything common among us, it has to be problems. Sometimes they are big, sometimes small, but they are there. There are times when we see no solution. Then we need others to help us cope. We believe that the Church is a family and in the caring business. The Bible teaches, "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2). No, we can't solve all your problems, but we can listen and help you find answers in Christ. We care enough to try. We extend our invitation to come and visit us Sunday and Wednesday to study God’s word.
